Are You Using The Right Vitamin C Skincare?

Vitamin C is one of my favorite ingredients that delivers multiple perks. It has a ton of benefits such as improvement in pigmentation and texture to reversing age and sun damage like melasma. Vitamin C can help even out your skin tone, protects against free radical damage and helps to improve hydration in your skin. When paired with regular sunscreen use, Vitamin C protects the skin from the sun’s UV rays. Vitamin C can slow down aging in skin both by reversing existing damage as well as preventing future damage, which keeps skin healthy longer. The most popular benefit of vitamin C is collagen production, which helps plump the skin and fill in fine lines and wrinkles, slowing down the signs of aging.

These are the most common forms of Vitamin C available in skincare products:

L Ascorbic acid is the most common form of Vitamin C when it comes to skincare.  It has trouble passing through the lipid bilayer, and must be used quickly, as it is relatively unstable.  It also is not the best option for those with sensitive skin, as it requires a low pH to be truly effective.

Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate is a more stable and bioavailable form of Vitamin C than the more common L Ascorbic acid.  Less irritating than Ascorbic acid.  Best for sensitive skin types

Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate is another Vitamin C derivative that is water soluble, non-irritating, and more stable than L Ascorbic acid.  Unlne L Ascorbic acid which can be found from 10-95% concentrations, MAP works best at lower concentrations between 1-5%.  Both SAP and MAP are gaining in popularity because of their permeability, they can be used in lower concentrations and deliver the same excellent benefits.

What you put in your body is just as important as what you put on it, so eating foods high in vitamin C will also benefit your skin. In addition to the orange, this vitamin is also found in strawberries, brussel sprouts, and red peppers to name a few.

Here are some of my favorite picks... Skin Therapy Vitamin C Plus and Saian Natural Clinic Pure Vitamin C Serum
